Happy Tuesday Hive Members!

It’s officially fall, one of the best seasons in the Salt Lake Area.

To help ring it in we have a list of some of the best free things to do around Salt Lake.

Let’s dive in.

Free Activities!

A lot of activities we highlight tend to cost a little something but there’s so much around Salt Lake that doesn’t cost anything! Here’s a few you may not have heard of before.

Star Parties

Leave the city glow behind and take in the night sky at one of Salt Lake’s regular Star Parties. Local astronomy groups set up high-powered telescopes and share their passion at spots like the County Library, the University of Utah’s South Physics Observatory (open on Wednesday nights), Antelope Island, and Wheeler Historic Farm.

You’ll get the chance to see planets, clusters of stars, and maybe even a satellite drifting by—all while enjoying the view alongside someone special!

Bar @ SCELto

Just east of Temple Square sits one of the world’s largest genealogical libraries—open to the public at no cost. FamilySearch blends advanced technology with a vast archive of family records, giving visitors the chance to uncover their own links to the past.

Hands-on exhibits let you trace ancestral migration routes, map your heritage, and even spot connections to well-known figures, making family history a surprisingly fun and interactive group experience.

The Living Room Hike

Only a short drive from downtown, the Living Room Trail gives hikers a quick 2.8-mile round-trip escape with a reward that’s pure Salt Lake.

The trail winds upward through patches of scrub oak and seasonal wildflowers before leading to its quirky highlight—sandstone slabs stacked to resemble couches and chairs.

From there, you’ll settle into a front-row seat overlooking the valley, the kind of place where it’s easy to linger, talk, and let the moment stretch out.
